Nam Ngum, the largest lake in Laos, is a haven for diverse aquatic life, particularly fish, with over 55 indigenous species including catfish, carp, and tilapia. The fishing industry plays a significant role in the local economy.

The lake’s surrounding forests and numerous islands also provide habitats for various terrestrial and avian species. Birdwatchers can spot kingfishers, herons, and egrets, all drawn to the lake’s abundant fish population.

Vang Vieng’s traditional handicrafts reflect the rich cultural heritage of its ethnic groups, particularly Hmong and Khmu, with textiles as a highlight.
